The sump pump maintenance schedule

A sump pump fails silently — it just doesn’t start one day, and you learn about it from the floor. This ten-minute routine, done twice a year, catches nearly every failure mode early.

The ten-minute routine

  1. Pour in a full bucket of water. The pump should start promptly, empty the pit, and stop cleanly. This one test exercises the float, the motor, the valve and the discharge — it is 80% of the whole inspection.
  2. Listen while it runs. A healthy pump hums. Grinding, rattling or screeching is bearings or a damaged impeller — mechanical wear that only ever gets worse.
  3. Move the float by hand. It must travel freely through its whole range. Check nothing can pin it: power cords are the classic culprit — tie them up out of the float's arc.
  4. Look into the pit. Sediment, gravel and debris wear the impeller and jam floats. Scoop the pit clean; if there's a thick silt layer every visit, tell whoever services your system — the tile may be feeding sediment.
  5. Verify the check valve. After a cycle, the pit should not refill from the pipe. Backflow means the valve has failed: the pump is re-pumping the same water and cycling twice as often as it should.
  6. Walk the discharge line outside. Outlet clear of leaves, soil, snow and ice; water visibly flowing away from the wall. In winter, an outlet frozen into a snowbank is the most common “the pump worked but the basement flooded” scenario.
  7. Check the power situation. The pump should have its own outlet — not an extension cord, not a power bar shared with the freezer. If the outlet is switched, tape the switch.
  8. Test the battery backup (if you have one — and if your basement is finished, you should): unplug the primary pump and run the bucket test again on battery power. Check the battery's age; five years is a typical service life even if it has never run.

Signs the pump itself is on borrowed time

  • Age 7–10 years — typical service life for a residential pump. Past it, planned replacement is cheaper than the gamble.
  • Short-cycling — kicking on every few minutes in dry weather usually means a failed check valve or a mis-set float, both fixable; constant cycling in wet weather may mean the pump or pit is undersized for the inflow.
  • Running continuously during every melt — the pump may be keeping up, barely. One power outage or one bigger storm removes the “barely”.
  • Any bucket-test failure — a pump that hesitates today is a pump that fails during the April melt, which is exactly when it will be asked to run hardest.

Timing matters more than most people think: do the spring check in early March, before the melt — finding a dead pump in mid-April is finding it under water. The fall check in October catches what summer sediment and a dry pit have done to the seals.
